The @USGS Streamgaging Program has been measuring our Nation’s rivers and streams since 1889. We have gone a long way from the first 27 gages installed to measure streamflow for hydropower to today’s 8,532 rural and urban gages which can measure both water quantity and quality. USGS streamgages are critical for managing streamflow, forecasting floods, operating hydropower plants, identifying safe recreation conditions, supporting infrastructure and transportation, and more.
