As many of you know, I've been working to ensure that the free activities on my website will still be available when Flash is removed from browsers in January. I'm working hard but it's taking longer than I expected. What many people don't know is that if you download the activities to your computer, they will continue to work in January and into the forseeable future. There's other benefits too. This video explains why it's a good idea to download activities and shows, step by step, how to set

Day 14 of our free accessible Advent Calendar and today we're getting musical. Move your mouse over (or touch) the reindeer to make some music... with farts! Well it's better out than in. https://www.ianbean.co.uk/advent21/ | Senict

Day 5 of our free accessible Advent calendar and we're joining the Christmas ducks for a festive sing-along. I originally wrote this activity back in 1999 and it was a firm favourite with my students at Priory Woods. I updated the activity for newer computers a couple of years ago. https://www.ianbean.co.uk/advent21/ | Senict

I've been working on a couple of new activities which focus on visual stimulation using abstract video patterns. They may be a little too big to run online but I'll try and get them on the download pages soon. Here's an example. | Senict

I thought you might like to see the 'younger' version of the keyboard recognition program. Just needs some tidying up. I press the wrong key a couple of times so you can here the 'fail' sound. Finished and on the website probably tomorrow. | Senict

Here's a look at the new iTalk 4 device that's now available from Ablenet. It reminds me a little of the 4talk4 we used to sell at Inclusive a few years ago but updated and so much lighter and easier to use. Four front switches activate five levels of four messages. Up to four switches can be connected at the rear of the device so each message can be used with bespoke switches. It's another very useful tool in our toolbox for AAC users and has a useful application in teaching switch skills too,

Back in 2002, I also used to make and share talking books. I remember making this one with teacher Mick Wheldon and our SLT Assistant whose name I sadly forget. It was downloaded 1000s of times and converted into the first of the ReadIt! series of talking books by Inclusive Technology. | Senict

Do you know the difference between mouse over and targeted activities? If you are using eye with students experiencing severe, profound and complex needs, you probably should. Here’s three eye gaze activities. In each, I’m moving my mouse around the screen as fast as I possibly can. This simulates a child sitting in front of the screen but not actually looking at anything on it. Their eyes just flicking across the screen. Note that the first two (mouse over) activities play their rewards even th

Just had a conversation with a couple of colleagues about the benefits (?) of using augmented reality (AR) devices with children who have Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties. I'm sorry, call me old fashioned but I believe that these children, some of which face the greatest of challenges simply understanding the envionment in which they live, need to experience the real world more, not some computer generated world. I'm all for new technology and offering our students opportunities for n

Here's another of the programs you'll find on the SENict Software website. Choose Transport is a transport themed choosing program for one or two switch scanning, pointing devices, touch screens and eye gaze. The program allows for personalisation to help you match it to the access needs of your learners. Like all of the 30 teaching activities on SENict Software, it can be used online or downloaded and run from the school network. A subscription costs just £66.00 per year and incudes all of our

Digging through some older videos for the YouTube channel and came across this special moment for me. This is from a keynote I gave at the Spectronics Conference in Australia back in 2012. The context is that I was talking about the 'Killer App', that one important element that changes technology from something we do to being a useful tool for engagement learning and communication. Almost 15 years ago, Priory Woods won a Childnet International Award for creating the world's first web site with online accessible games and activities for children with additional needs. So much has changed since those early days of the internet but the needs of our students have remained the much the same... exploring and interacting with the world around them and developing capacity to communicate to the best of their ability. I'm proud to have played a small part in achieving those goals fo
