🐺 The Italian Wolf Today The Italian (Apennine) wolf (Canis lupus italicus) is one of Europe’s great wildlife recovery stories. Once reduced to fewer than 100 animals in the 1970s, Italy now has an estimated 3,000–3,600 wolves, living mainly across the Apennines and the Alps. Their recovery happened naturally, without reintroduction, thanks to legal protection and changing attitudes. Italian wolves are genetically distinct and have helped repopulate wolves across the Alps into France, Switzerla
