Do this by hand. If you do it with electric hedge trimmers you will likely cut off buds and you could damage the plant. Same goes for azaleas. Also it will look more natural. If you have slightly (or massively) overgrown flowering evergreen shrubs, it’s best to prune them right after they bloom. This gives the plant time to work on producing new buds, which will hopefully bloom the following season but it’s not guaranteed.
