Thousands of years ago, this area was a chain of slightly elevated “tree islands” rising out of the Everglades. These dry spots made ideal camps for early Native Americans like the Tequesta, who hunted, fished, and traveled through the wetlands. Today the park protects oak hammock forest, wetlands, and wildlife, with peaceful trails and a small nature center that explains the ecology and archaeology of the region. It even used to be the site of an old Pioneer Themed amusement park (Pioneer City)
