Shark tracking doesn’t stop when a SPOT tag goes silent. While OCEARCH may lose signals from SPOT tags after a few years, each shark is also fitted with a surgically implanted acoustic tag. These tags send signals to acoustic array receivers whenever a shark comes within half a mile, giving researchers long-term insights into shark movements and behavior.
