Canberra-based wombat rescuer Yolandi Vermaark of Wombat Rescue is on the frontline of fighting mange in wombats. Here, Australian Geographic follows her on one of her typical weekends, which involves looking for joeys in roadkill and treating a small population of wombats with cydectin that helps get rid of mange. Another wombat treated for mange early this morning. We suspect it’s Stu, a wombat treated once last year before he disappeared. One dose Bravecto is not enough so it’s starting from scratch again and hopefully we can give him two follow up doses. An incredible lucky day for this wombat. Its 1.5 hours drive for us to get here and softly raining. We expected to put a camera up with a flap as this sick wombat lives under the house But as soon as we were on the access road I spotted a wombat shape in the garden She was out and about and we got a dose on her quickly before she bolted What made it harder was the wind was blowing on my back so blowing my smell directly towards her. I could see her sniffing the air as she became aware of me so I
