Verizon said it has resolved an hours-long outage that is believed to have left tens of thousands of US customers without access to voice and data services for much of Wednesday.

When iPhones aren’t connected to a cellular network, they will typically alert the user by giving an indication in the phone’s status bar. Those notifications usually say “No Service” or “Searching,” but your phone may also say “SOS” or “SOS only.”

The outage cut off tens of thousands of users and lasted more than six hours. The cause was not immediately clear.

Verizon users slam service, seek refunds over disruption to life in massive outage after a nationwide network failure left phones in SOS mode. Downdetector logged over 170,000 reports. Users demanded refunds as Verizon confirmed voice and data issues with no repair timeline.

As of 10 a.m., Verizon is reporting small outages in Yosemite and Vidal, way in the desert in San Bernardino County, but no other outages.
